Most hair looks great walking out of a salon. We care how yours looks eight weeks later.

Week eight, side by side

Hair grows about a centimetre a month. Colour painted on in one solid block leaves a hard line as it grows. Colour placed strand by strand grows out soft, so you can leave it longer between visits.

Week 8: about 2cm of regrowth. The block colour has a clear stripe; the lived-in colour just looks a bit more natural.

Four chairs

Tasha Marlowe

Owner, colour specialist

Trained in Leeds and spent eight years in city salons before opening Marlowe in 2019. Does most of the copper in this town, and isn’t sorry.

Priya

Senior stylist, curls and texture

Cuts curly and coily hair dry, curl by curl, so you can see the shape as it happens. Will talk you out of a straightener.

Ellie

Stylist, cuts and blow-dries

Precise bobs, grown-out fringes rescued, and the blow-dry people book before job interviews and weddings.

Jade

Junior stylist

Two years in and already fast with a toner. Book Jade and most services cost about 20% less, with Tasha checking the colour.

Talk. Ten minutes, with your hair dry and how you normally wear it. What you like, what drives you mad, how often you’ll really come back.

Mix. Colour is mixed for your hair on the day, not poured from a standard recipe, and placed where it will grow out kindly.

Cut. Cut for how it falls on day forty, not just how it looks under our lights.

Show. We finish it the way you’ll do it at home, with your own hands on the dryer if you want, so Tuesday goes fine.

Do I need a skin test? Yes, before any colour if you’re new to us or haven’t had colour here for six months. It takes five minutes and has to be done at least 48 hours before your appointment. Pop in any time we’re open.

Is there a deposit? For colour appointments over two hours we take £20 when you book, which comes off your bill. Cuts don’t need one.

What if I need to cancel? Give us 48 hours and there’s no charge. Less than that and we keep the deposit, because that chair sits empty.

I’m running late. What happens? Ring us. Up to fifteen minutes we’ll still do everything; later than that we may have to shorten things or move you.

Can you fix colour done somewhere else? Usually, though big corrections can take two visits. Book a free consultation first so we can be honest about time and cost.

Do you do curly and textured hair? Yes. Priya specialises in it and cuts curls dry. Come with your hair as you normally wear it.

Is the salon accessible? We’re up one flight of stairs with no lift, which we know isn’t good enough. Tell us when you book and we’ll do what we can, including home visits for regulars.

Can I bring my kids? Of course. Kids’ cuts are £18 for under-12s, and Saturday mornings are the busiest, so book ahead.

How do I pay? Card or contactless. We don’t take cheques, and we never charge for a consultation.
